Silk Rugs

Silk Rugs

Silk, when wetted, loses 20% of its natural strength. So it is important to not damage it with abrasive cleaning agents, hot water, and steam cleaning.

With silk rugs, professional cleaning can be the wiser option. When cleaning at home, the following tips will be helpful:

  • Vacuum clean silk rugs regularly with a brushless suction head to avoid damaging the rug or sweep them gently with a broom.
  • You can also remove debris and odours by taking the rug outside and shaking it.

STAINS, SPILLS & ODOURS

  • Stains need to be cleaned immediately before the liquid attaches to the fibres.
  • Solid debris needs to be scooped out of the rug using a spoon taking care not to scrape the fibres.
  • For liquid spills, the affected areas need to be pressed with a clean, white cloth to remove as much liquid as possible.
  • Club soda can be applied to remove colour from stains. Blot the stain by pouring club soda onto a clean cloth. A dry cloth can then be used to absorb any excess club soda leaving the area to dry in the air. Use of heat in any form such as a hair dryer is not recommended as it may damage the rug.
  • Stains can also be removed by applying a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water. to remove stains. Pour the vinegar and water solution on a clean cloth. Press the cloth on the stain to blot it out. Then take a dry cloth to absorb the excess solution. Dry the area of the stain outside in the air. Use of heat in any form is not recommended.
  • Commercial cleaning agents may permanently damage the rug.
  • Odours can be removed from silk rugs by sprinkling baking soda on the rug, letting the rug absorb the baking soda for an hour before vacuuming it off with a brushless suction type vacuum cleaner.
  • Odours may also be cleaned by mixing equal portions of vinegar and water in a spray bottle and then misting the rug with the solution and then wiping the entire rug with soft, clean and dry cloth.

MAINTENANCE TIPS:

  • Keep silk rugs in an area of the house that sees low traffic.
  • A polite request to guests to remove their shoes would be much easier than cleaning a silk rug.
  • Don’t eat or drink in the place where you have kept a silk rug.
  • Don’t expose your silk rug to too much sunlight. You can rotate your silk rug every 3-4 months to ensure all parts of your rug get equal exposure to sunlight.
