Size

It’s all too common to make the mistake of choosing a rug that’s too small for the room. In an average-sized room, there should be about 10” to 20” of bare floor between the edges of the rug and the walls of the room. Depending on your room’s size, you can go as low as 8” and as high as 24”. But you need to make sure that your rug is centred in the room and the distance between the rug and the wall is the same on all four sides. And of course, layering rugs, now a trend is always an option, which means you simply put one rug on top of another combining different rug shapes to bring a modern or cosier feel to a room.

Your rugs will also define your space. Think about an area of your room that you want to highlight and choose your rug accordingly but remember that as a standard rule of thumb, bigger is always better than smaller.

Your floor plans will also influence your decision about size. If you have an open floor plan, where two or more common spaces have been joined to form a larger space by eliminating partition walls, you might want to ensure that all your area rugs are coordinated properly both in terms of sizes, colours and patterns. On the other hand, if you’re thinking about layering rugs, the rules of the game will change accordingly.

Still wondering about which size to buy? Here are some tips:

3’ x 5’ Rugs

A standard rug size that is best for hallways, kitchens, entryways, and smaller rooms or areas. You can also have one in the bedroom by placing one at the end of the bed. These rugs serve as great accent rugs for smaller areas. Being small and rectangular in size, they’re also perfectly suited for hallways.

5’ x 7’ Rugs

Larger than 3’ x 5’ and more rectangular in size, these are ideal for filling out a box-like space or a small room that has a square and rectangular shape. They are well-suited for use in offices, smaller rooms, and entryways. When placed under a floating desk area it anchors the workspace. It can also delineate zones in open spaces within the office.

5’ x 8’ Rugs

Though small for use in a large living room, they can be ideal for layering over larger rugs like a 8’ x 10’ one where they fill out the space beautifully adding depth and contrasting colours. They can however fit perfectly well when centred in a small room for a child. They are also used in offices and in studio apartments.

8’ x 10’ Rugs

These are large standard sized rugs suitable for living, dining, and main bedrooms. When placed in a living room, they can accommodate all the furniture pieces pulling them together on its top. This size is also layered on top of a larger rug to extend its reach and coverage. This size also fits underneath all standard sized dining tables and all around, to accommodate the chairs as well.

9’ x 12’ Rugs

These large rugs are designed to be statement pieces for living rooms and primary bedrooms. You can think of them as artworks that beautify your floors. They can also bring together floating furniture yet keep them correctly spaced to unify the decor without the clutter and the cramping. When placed in the dining room, they can also bring in balance and symmetry serving as an anchor under one large dining set. In a spacious bedroom, a rug of this size will anchor a king bed beautifully, feeling cosy and looking proportional, as it adds space on all sides of the bed.

12’ x 15’ Rugs

These are grand rugs made for the grandest of spaces, ideally suited to an open floor plan. They evoke the feeling of opulence in grand living rooms and bedrooms warming up a large living space that can look cold and barren without a rug of this size. In a bedroom, a rug this size can replace a carpet running from one wall to the other. It provides amazing coverage especially on wood floors, and is great for layering underneath a patterned rug.

Runner Rugs

Considered chic and versatile options for hallways, entryways, and kitchens, long and narrow runner rugs can add a bit of colour, texture and padding to smaller areas. 2.5’ x 7.5’ runners are perfect for entry halls, especially narrow foyers or for defining the zone in the front door area. You can also draw attention to your fireplace by placing one in front of your fireplace.
