A Brief History of Viscose Carpet or Bamboo Carpets
The term 'viscose' is a little ambiguous. It has a lengthy history, includes a great deal of complicated chemistry, and the term is used variously depending on the situation. It can be used to describe a chemical solution, a procedure, or the final product. It doesn't end there, though. There are several versions of the procedure that result in comparable but somewhat different fibres with a plethora of names, including trademarked brand names! The list goes on and on: rayon, modal, lyocell, luxcelle, Tencel, even, fake silk, bamboo silk, art silk, and so forth. The most frequent term for the carpet fibre is viscose rayon, however, it can also be called any of the other names. So, before we get into the benefits of viscose rugs, let's go over some background information to help you understand what we mean when we say viscose and what you're getting when you buy a viscose carpet.
Invention of Viscose Carpet or Bamboo Carpets
Diseases began to plague cultured silkworms in the mid-1840s, which were cultivated to meet Europe's massive need for silk. This was a particularly harsh blow for France, where a disease known as 'Pébrine' was wreaking havoc on the silkworm population; in 1865, the scientist Louis Pasteur, who is best known today for making milk safe to drink, was hired to investigate the sickness. While aiding Pasteur, one of his pupils, Hilaire de Chardonnet, began experimenting with artificial silk substitutes, which began by accident (as many many scientific breakthroughs do). Chardonnet had spilt nitrocellulose (an explosive substance used in photography at the time) in his darkroom and noticed that when he tried to clean it up, the solution produced fibres.
Though Pébrine was successfully tamed with Pasteur's aid, and Japanese silk imports had increased to meet European demand, Chardonnet believed his product, now refined into what he humbly termed 'Chardonnet Silk,' still had a market. Unfortunately, the original Chardonnet Silk, like the nitrocellulose it was created from, was prone to catching fire and exploding, making it unsuitable for clothing. It took numerous efforts to fix the early issues, but it was ultimately commercially manufactured in 1891. At about the same time, in England, chemists Edward John Bevan and Charles Frederick Cross, who specialised in papermaking, invented a novel procedure for producing this silk-like fibre, which they dubbed 'viscose,' and patented with their business partner Clayton Beadle in 1892.
Bamboo silk rugs are not made entirely of silk. It has a proportion of wool and silk. A classic silk rug, on the other hand, is made entirely of the sheer silk that a silkworm generates in its cocoon and contains no wool. Bamboo silk carpets are soft and squishy underfoot, regardless of how they are treated. They are not as tough as you may think based on their origin. Bamboo silk rugs can last for years without displaying signs of wear and tear. Even after many years, it appears just as it did when you first got it from the shop – given you do anything you can to keep it in good condition. Bamboo silk rugs are just like any other rug in terms of care and maintenance; they don't require any extra attention. Simply vacuum and dust it once a week and maintain it free of spills and other debris, and it will last at least 5 to 7 years.
Viscose Carpet or Bamboo Carpets- Advantages
- The Feel - Viscose was created as a silk alternative and hence has the same softness and smoothness as silk - you won't find anything softer than a viscose carpet! Unlike polypropylene, viscose carpets do not accumulate static electricity and are excellent insulators, keeping you toasty in the cold. Also, they have a thick pile, making them feel extremely sumptuous and cosy - if you're not convinced, purchase a free sample of one of our viscose leftovers.
- The Price - Considering the complicated manufacturing process, viscose is still quite inexpensive to create, and the savings are passed on to the buyers! Viscose carpet is quite economical when compared to wool or even polypropylene carpet, so it's always worth considering if you're on a budget.
- The Look - Natural fibres cannot reach the uniformity of look, colour, or texture that viscose can. It is a wonderful pick if you are one of those persons who loves everything to be 'just so.' Also, as we covered in our last article on Winter Trends, the 'crushed velvet' style is quite popular right now, and some viscose carpets can frequently achieve that sumptuous, multicoloured look.
